#011: Call of the Void

Alex recaps his Riot Fest experience and describes his passive-aggressive technique for dealing with “swaggy teenagers” at a concert.

There is nothing passive about the upcoming Call of the Void EP, which takes a punk rock turn in Alex’s opinion. The good kind of punk as clarified by B Lo, the “punk was cool two decades ago” guy. Unlike a poser punk band, Call of the Void does not have dick jokes in their songs, although Alex does address that possibility in this interview.

Catch Call of the Void on tour with Inter Arma late September and early October 2016.

#010: Helleborus

Wyatt was on Metalix earlier this summer but that was before B Lo saw Helleborus play in July. He may have a mild, modest attitude during interviews but Wyatt describes his stage persona as “possessed”.

Wyatt continues to be the black metal ambassador for Manitou Springs, which B Lo inexplicably mistakes for Monument. Both towns are close to Colorado Springs, so the distinction may be small for Helleborus’ international fan base. Think of Manitou Springs as a mountain hippie sanctuary, while Monument is the place where blizzards always jam the freeway.

Denver’s Black Sky Brewery made a Helleborus beer for their CD release show, but finding good blue spruce for the recipe was challenging. Wyatt actually picked the spruce needles himself.

#009: Equipoise

What is more important for music listeners: production quality or live reproduction of recorded music? B Lo asks Stevie Boiser, vocalist for Equipoise among a total of four active projects including TethysAshen Horde and Dissonance in Design.

One might assume involvement with so many bands would leave no time for anything else, yet Stevie still maintains a job and obviously has time for an interview on Metalix. Stevie discusses how modern technology makes it easy for bands to collaborate across great distances. Even better, artists contribute at times most convenient for them.

Stevie and B Lo are fellow nerds mutually enthralled with Pokemon Go and Stevie knows a few great places to hunt in metro Denver. He also explains how one track in Equipoise’s new EP Birthing Homunculi is tied to Fullmetal Alchemist, a popular anime.

All proceeds from Birthing Homunculi go to the Jason Becker Foundation.
